LAND CAPABILITY ASSESSMENT

Purpose: A suite of tests specifically tailored for consultants in the design of on-site wastewater management options

Sampling requirements: From an augered borehole, or soil profile excavation, sample each of up to three horizons.  Take a sample from each horizon and bag separately in labelled plastic bags. A good double handful of soil is required for each sample. The following analyses will be conducted:

Cost (incl GST)

Horizon

Analyses

$480 for suite Each of the three horizons
(Horizons 1, 2 & 3)
Sample preparation - drying, crushing, sieving to < 2 mm

pH (1:5 water), pH (1:5 CaCl2), Electrical conductivity (1:5 water), salinity hazard,  major cations (Ca, Mg, K, Na), Exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), Ca/Mg ratio, Exchangeable Acidity (H+, Al3+), cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil colour, soil texture, aggregate stability, assessment for irrigation application or trench disposal.

horizon 3  (lowest horizon) 5-point phosphorus sorption rating (graphical and numerical results)

Note:  The results of the above tests can be used in the design of on-site wastewater systems for the relevant state guidelines.

SOIL PERMEABILITY TESTING

Purpose: Soil columns are packed with previously air-dried and sieved (<2 mm) soil, to a bulk density similar to the original soil body. Using a constant head approach, the soil columns are treated with rain water in four columns as a control while six test columns are treated with effluent of a known source (bore water, coal seam gas water, septic effluent, laundry water or others). Over many days the through-flow of water is measured and a time-related hydraulic conductivity is obtained. It is usual that the percolation continues over several days.

Sample requirements:  Soil sample size is 5 kg per run, and effluent volume 20 L per soil. Total run is 10 replicates, as shown.

Synthesised effluent may be used where particular properties need to be tested, such as laundry water, or effluent with a particular sodium adsorption ratio.

Cost:  contact laboratory for specific quotation after discussing actual testing regime.
